Three good things to do during a traffic stop

Getting stopped by the police is rarely a pleasant experience.  Ask anyone if they would do anything else besides being pulled over, and you may be surprised by what you may hear. Some may say spending a day alone with their mother-in-law; others may say cleaning up cow pies. As annoying as it might be, the possibility of getting pulled over is a reality, so it is important to know how to effectively deal with a traffic stop.

This post will provide some helpful tips.

Don’t make any sudden moves – Instead, make slow, deliberate moves so that the officer does not feel as if his (or her) safety is in jeopardy. In fact, asking the officer if you may reach for something (like your wallet) is okay to do. While it may sound cliché, keeping your hands where the officer can see them is also important.

Don’t be a smart mouth – Indeed, it is okay to be annoyed with the stop, but chances are that the cop is annoyed as well by having to stop you. It would be helpful not to exacerbate the situation by being smart with the officer. Instead, treat the encounter like a public safety welfare check.

Maintain eye contact – To a police officer, so much is said through your eyes than what comes out of your mouth. Your body language and eye contact can tell an officer if you are nervous, suspicious, or simply afraid. To keep an officer’s suspicions at bay, maintain eye contact, but don’t get into a staring contest.

If you end up being charged with a crime after a traffic stop, an experienced criminal defense attorney can advise you of your rights and options.
